Calls Grow for Resignation of AfD Officials in Gelsenkirchen After Street-Sweeping Video

The video has triggered sharp reactions from the other parties represented in the Gelsenkirchen council. According to WDR information, the remaining factions are fundamentally willing to support a motion to remove Emmerich from office. Because the AfD holds 20 of the 66 elected council seats, nearly all of the other members would have to vote in favor of the motion for it to succeed: "Da die AfD 20 der 66 gewählten Ratsmitglieder stelle, müssten fast alle anderen für die Abberufung stimmen."

Political Reaction Across the Council

The SPD said discussions on the matter will take place next week: "Laut SPD werde es kommende Woche Gespräche dazu geben." The Left party in Gelsenkirchen has gone further, demanding that both Seli-Zacharias and Emmerich be expelled from the city council. Beyond the political response, the Cologne Higher Regional Public Prosecutor's Office (Generalstaatsanwaltschaft Köln) is examining potential criminal consequences. Prosecutors and Civil-Society Groups Step In

Civil-society groups have also mobilized. The Essen-based citizens' alliance "Mut machen – Steele bleibt bunt" sent a letter to the state parliamentary groups of the CDU, SPD, FDP and Greens, as well as to Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) and Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU). The lawmaker has separately drawn attention for a social media post in which she wrote, with reference to anti-immigration protests in Belfast triggered by a knife attack, "Der Bürgerkrieg ist längst ausgebrochen. Männer erhebt euch!" She told the WDR she believes that violence by migrants could lead to civil-war-like conditions in many European countries if politics does not act: "Bürgerkriegsähnliche Zustände haben wir aber längst auch hier bei uns."

Broader Controversy Around the Lawmaker

The broader political coalition has framed the incident as a question of basic dignity. In a statement, other parties in Gelsenkirchen wrote: "Gelsenkirchen braucht Amtsträgerinnen und Amtsträger, die verbinden statt spalten und die Würde aller Menschen achten." The Greens' position aligns with that assessment, arguing that any officeholder who participates in pressuring, filming and publicly humiliating residents on the open street cannot be trusted to carry out public duties.

The removal process would be governed by North Rhine-Westphalia's municipal code, which sets out the conditions under which a directly elected mayor can be dismissed by the council. With the AfD unable to block such a motion on its own, the outcome will depend on whether the non-AfD parties can agree on a common course of action in the coming days.
