Canada faces Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16 on Saturday (7:00 PM) in Houston and aims to continue its historic tournament run.
First Round of 16 in Canadian history
It is the first Round of 16 in Canadian football history at a World Cup. After the Canadians advanced past the group stage for the first time and beat South Africa 1:0 in the Round of 32, the team led by coach Jesse Marsch now enters the next round as the underdog. "We know everyone writes us off, and in that lies an opportunity," said the American, who previously coached at RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.
The opponent from North Africa is considered difficult to assess. Marsch explicitly praised the Moroccans: the team has "incredible individual talent" and "no weaknesses whatsoever" – well organized and disciplined. "No one can stop us when we play the football we are capable of," Marsch said, showing his attacking intent. His team wants to "find the balance between tension and carefreeness" and play "disciplined and organized" throughout the full 90 minutes, as he emphasized.
Morocco also benefits from the confidence gained in the Round of 32, where the team had dominated the Dutch over long stretches in the view of observers. "We completely dominated the Dutch team," Morocco's coach Mohamed Ouahbi had said after the match. His team had earned respect after the Netherlands' elimination. At the same time, however, Ouahbi also warned: "Nobody is invincible. If we do things wrong, we're going home."
