Ottawa, September 7, 2026

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on imports from the United States, which according to statements from Ottawa are set to take effect on Tuesday.

Background of the Tensions

The Canadian government is responding to US tariffs that had been imposed by the American side under President Donald Trump. The measure is part of an escalating trade conflict between the two closely linked economic partners. Retaliatory tariffs of this kind are intended to increase pressure on the US government to reconsider its own duties.

According to earlier statements from Canada, products in the areas of steel and aluminum, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, as well as electronics are affected by the new tariffs. Ottawa is thereby deliberately targeting industries that are considered politically sensitive in the United States or are strongly anchored in electoral districts there.
