The Cape Verde Islands have held two-time world champion Uruguay to a 2:2 (2:1) at their first-ever World Cup participation and remain unbeaten after two group stage matches.

Historic free kick from Pina

In front of 64,003 spectators at the stadium in Miami, Kevin Pina gave the World Cup newcomer the lead in the 21st minute with a direct free kick from over 30 meters out, scoring the first-ever World Cup goal in Cape Verde's history. The defender, who plays in the Russian league, drove the ball through a "mini wall" of two Uruguay players and into the right corner.

But the South Americans struck back before the break: After a corner kick, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha deflected the ball onto the post, and Maxi Araujo tapped in the temporary equalizer with his head (44th minute) – but the goal was disallowed for offside. Shortly afterward, Uruguay combined their way through down the left side, and Araujo finished off a pass to make it 1:1.
