Cape Verde has qualified for a football World Cup for the first time and, along the way, defeated favorite Spain, with 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha being celebrated as a national hero.

The island group off the west coast of Africa had qualified for a FIFA World Cup finals for the very first time. Even just participating in the finals was regarded as a historic achievement for the underdog, but progressing past multiple-time world champion Spain exceeded all expectations.
