Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza said on Friday that Johanna and Clark Morgan ran a crematorium in Chicago Heights, south of Chicago, whose license was revoked last year after authorities discovered improperly stored bodies and hundreds of cremated remains that were never returned to families.

The allegations resurfaced this week after a Cook County government release was issued on Thursday, drawing renewed attention to the Morgans and the operations of their facility. Mendoza, the state comptroller, used her public remarks to highlight what she characterized as a long-running failure of regulatory oversight in the funeral and cremation industry. She said the facility had continued to present itself to grieving families as a legitimate service provider even after losing its state license.
