BEIJING, May 7, 2026

A Chinese military court has handed suspended death sentences to two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, after convicting them of bribery in a sweeping anti-corruption purge under President Xi Jinping.

The sentences, which include a two-year reprieve typically commuted to life imprisonment, mark the latest high-profile removals in Xi’s decade-long campaign targeting senior officials. Both men were expelled from the Communist Party in 2024 and stripped of all political rights and personal assets.

Military Leadership Purged

Wei Fenghe, who served as defense minister from 2018 to 2023, and his successor Li Shangfu, who held the post for just months before vanishing from public view, were convicted of accepting bribes. Li faced additional charges for offering bribes. Their sentences come amid a dramatic consolidation of power within China’s Central Military Commission, which now has only one member aside from Xi himself, down from 11 previously.
