Bogotá, Colombia — April 25, 2026 More than 50 nations, including several European countries, Norway, the UK, and Canada, are gathering in Colombia for a high-level conference aimed at advancing the global phase-out of fossil fuels, following stalled negotiations at last year’s COP30 climate summit. The meeting, co-organized by Colombia and the Netherlands, runs through April 29 and brings together governments that have expressed commitment to accelerating the transition away from coal, oil, and gas. The event marks a renewed effort to establish a concrete roadmap after the failure to reach consensus on fossil fuel phase-out timelines at the COP30 talks in Brazil.

Post-COP30 Momentum

The summit follows contentious debates at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), where nations clashed over the pace and mechanisms for ending reliance on fossil fuels. Despite widespread recognition of the need to curb emissions, disagreements over equity, financing, and timelines prevented a unified agreement.

Colombia, which has been vocal about its own plans to reduce fossil fuel dependency, is positioning itself as a bridge between developed and developing nations in the negotiations. The Netherlands, meanwhile, brings its experience as a European leader in renewable energy policy to the table.
