Ankara, 26 May 2026
A court in Ankara has removed Özgür Özel as chairman of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and temporarily reinstated his 77-year-old predecessor Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, triggering a leadership crisis and street protests.
The ruling, issued on a Thursday in late May, retroactively annulled Özel’s election at the November 2023 party congress, citing alleged bribery of delegates. The lawsuit was filed by CHP politicians from Kılıçdaroğlu’s camp, and the case had been dismissed once before being reopened without explanation.
On the Sunday following the court decision, uniformed police officers stormed the CHP headquarters in Ankara using batons and tear gas. Özgür Özel had barricaded himself in his office on the 12th floor before leaving the building surrounded by CHP parliamentarians.
