The Kennedy Center had been renamed "Trump Kennedy Center" in December, shortly after Trump took control of the institution. He had dismissed several board members and assumed the chairmanship himself. The renaming triggered significant protests, and numerous artists canceled their performances. Trump had justified the move at the time as a fight against what he described as "anti-American propaganda" in the cultural world.

The Kennedy Center on the Potomac River is named after former US President John F. Kennedy (1917–1963) and traditionally presents all genres of theater, dance, and music. The judge ruled that a name change for such a historic institution could not be made by the administration alone without further ado but required a resolution from Congress. Therefore, the renaming carried out in December is temporarily void.

At the same time, the Kennedy Center is temporarily prevented for two years from closing for renovations, as originally planned by Trump for the summer. The court thus also suspended the planned extensive construction work in this regard. The institution must largely maintain its operations during the current season.

Despite the setback at the Kennedy Center, the 79-year-old Trump is pursuing further construction projects in the capital. A new promenade is planned to connect the Abraham Lincoln Memorial with the nearby Potomac River, which bears the working title "Trump Promenade." Trump commented on this: "They want to call it the Trump Promenade. I don't know if I want that, but it will be beautiful."

In addition, Trump is planning a huge triumphal arch on the other side of the Potomac, which is to be almost three times as high as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and one and a half times as high as the Parisian Arc de Triomphe. Furthermore, a ballroom is currently being built, for which the former East Wing of the White House was demolished. Trump had also commissioned his confidant Richard Grenell to realign the Kennedy Center.
