Military background

According to his website, Jarvis was the first person since World War Two to give up his officer rank to stand in a by-election for Parliament. He first entered the House of Commons in 2011, when he was elected to represent the constituency of Barnsley Central.

Between 2011 and 2015, Jarvis held various positions within his parliamentary faction. In 2018, he was elected as Mayor of South Yorkshire, a newly created regional role.
