Dan Jarvis, a Labour MP for Barnsley North, has been appointed as British Secretary of State for Defence, succeeding John Healey following his resignation over a dispute about the defence budget, the government announced on Thursday evening.

The British government announced the appointment on the evening of the announcement, framing Jarvis as a security expert with military experience. Healey had stepped down from the post on Thursday in a row over the defence budget, and Jarvis was named to replace him.

Jarvis is a graduate of the Sandhurst military academy and was commissioned as an officer in the Parachute Regiment after his time at the academy. He went on to serve as a military officer in Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.
