Denmark’s social democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has abandoned her efforts to form a new government after one and a half months of failed negotiations following the March parliamentary election.

Negotiations Deadlock

Frederiksen, who previously governed in a coalition with the Liberal Party and the Moderates, was tasked after the first round of talks with forming a government that included the Socialist People’s Party and the Liberal Party. However, after weeks of discussions, no agreement could be reached, prompting her to step aside.

Lars Lokke Rasmussen, leader of the Moderates and a former prime minister, has thrown his support behind Troels Lund Poulsen, head of the Liberal Party, to take over the negotiations. Rasmussen’s endorsement significantly boosts Poulsen’s chances of leading the next phase of government formation.
