The German team began the tournament in Houston just as most observers had expected: with a clear mandatory win against the Caribbean outsider. In front of 68,000 spectators in the fully enclosed and air-conditioned stadium, the DFB prevailed 7:1 after initial difficulties, with the victory set up primarily by a strong second half. Julian Nagelsmann was able to draw on a broad squad of 26 players in his first World Cup match and rotated freely in the closing stages. „Wir haben Tore aus Standards gemacht, Tore aus Ballbesitz, Tore aus Umschaltaktionen nach Ballgewinn. Am Ende musst du auch erstmal sieben Tore schießen“, Nagelsmann said, praising the way the goals came about.
