Cologne, 24 August 2026

Cologne head coach René Wagner has accepted the favourite's role ahead of his side's DFB-Pokal first-round tie at Würzburg on 24 August 2026, while Wolfsburg prepare to visit fourth-tier outfit VSG Altglienicke on the same day.

Cologne's new head coach René Wagner has framed his side's opening competitive fixture of the season as a straightforward assignment. Speaking before the trip to lower-division Würzburg, Wagner accepted that Cologne are expected to progress. "Am Ende fahren wir dahin, um weiterzukommen," Wagner said, making clear that only a place in the next round will satisfy the Bundesliga club. The fixture is scheduled for 17:30 local time.

The Würzburg tie marks Cologne's first competitive outing of the 2026-27 campaign. After a summer of squad reshaping and a change in the dugout, the Rhineland club will look to translate pre-season preparations into cup form. Wagner's public stance leaves little room for ambiguity: anything other than progression to the second round would constitute an upset.
