Fonseca's Fearless Fightback

Djokovic had initially dominated proceedings in the afternoon heat, with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius. His experience and baseline precision proved too much for the young Brazilian in the early stages.

Fonseca, however, refused to wilt. He broke serve at the start of the third set and began to dictate rallies with his aggressive forehand, forcing the world number four onto the defensive.

The teenager's resilience was on full display in the fourth set. Serving to stay in the match at 4-5, he faced two break points but saved them with a sequence of four consecutive powerful forehand winners before forcing a decider.

A Decisive Fifth Set

In the fifth set, Djokovic appeared to regain the initiative. He broke Fonseca's serve to love to establish a 3-1 lead and seemed poised to close out the match.

But Fonseca responded immediately with a break back to level at 3-3. The momentum swung decisively when, at 5-5, the Brazilian produced a delicate drop shot to secure a crucial break of serve.

Serving for the match, Fonseca showed nerves of steel. Djokovic earned one final break point after two forehand errors from the youngster, but the Brazilian held firm and served out the contest to complete a famous upset.

A Historic Collapse

The defeat is a historic one for Djokovic. Before Friday, his career record after winning the first two sets stood at 279-1. The only previous player to overcome such a deficit against him was Austria's Jürgen Melzer, who achieved the feat in the 2010 French Open quarter-finals.

Melzer had won that match 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-4, a result that had stood alone in Djokovic's record books for 16 years until Fonseca's heroics.

After the match, a gracious Djokovic acknowledged his opponent's superiority. "Ohne Zweifel war er der bessere Spieler in den entscheidenden Momenten," he said. "Er war einfach besser."

Reactions from the Court

When asked whether he would return to Paris next year, the three-time champion offered an uncertain reply: "Ich weiß es nicht."

Fonseca, ranked 30th in the world and long considered one of the tour's brightest prospects, was almost disbelieving in victory. "Ich habe es nur genossen, was für ein Vergnügen war das," he said. "Ich bin einfach nur sehr glücklich."

The Brazilian admitted he had not expected to win. "Eigentlich nicht," he said when asked if he had foreseen the result.

Djokovic's frustration had briefly boiled over earlier in the match. After winning the second set, he was visibly annoyed with a cameraman he felt had encroached too close. "Kannst du etwas dichter in mein Gesicht kommen?" he snapped. "Um Gottes willen, mach' ein bisschen Platz."

A Rare Feat

Fonseca's victory means he becomes only the second player ever to recover from two sets down against Djokovic. He joins Melzer in that exclusive club.

The Brazilian's run adds to a growing youth movement at this year's tournament. Another 19-year-old, Spain's Rafael Jodar, has also advanced to the round of 16.
