An impact that crosses national borders

The effects are not limited to Austrian borders: Hungary, Romania and Serbia, countries that share stretches of the Danube basin with Austria, are also seeing a reduction in river flows. Water storage capacity, in particular, has returned to the center of proposals advanced by industry operators, who are calling for investments to make the hydroelectric supply chain more resilient to climate swings.

In terms of consequences for consumers, any recourse to electricity imports from neighboring countries could accentuate pressure on wholesale prices. The Austrian authorities are monitoring trends in energy markets, aware that an unfavorable hydrological season often translates into greater volatility in prices.
