Mondsee, July 5, 2026
A heavily intoxicated 57-year-old man hiked the via ferrata on the Drachenwand near Mondsee in Upper Austria on Saturday evening without any climbing equipment, triggering a mountain rescue operation.
The man was significantly alcoholized when he set out on the secured trail – without a climbing harness, rope, or helmet – according to the Mondsee mountain rescue team. How he managed the ascent at all remains unclear so far.
Around 8:45 p.m., a 50-year-old female mountaineer in the summit area noticed the stumbling man and raised the alarm. She and other climbers in the vicinity moved to safety, according to the mountain rescue team.
Background to the Incident
A member of the Mondsee mountain rescue team, which describes itself as operating with volunteer personnel, called the behavior „lebensgefährlich" (life-threatening). The risk of slipping on the exposed trail and plunging into the depths was said to have been enormous.
