Vienna, Austria – April 24, 2026

Consumers who have already booked package tours may face price increases of more than 8%, with some unable to cancel without penalty, according to recent clarifications by Austrian consumer protection authorities.

Consumer Rights and Price Increases

Under current regulations, travelers are entitled to cancel their package tours free of charge if the price is increased by more than 8% after booking. This rule is designed to protect consumers from sudden and significant cost hikes. However, if the increase is below this threshold, travelers may have no recourse unless their contract explicitly allows for cancellation.

For flights, the situation is stricter: once a flight is booked and paid for, airlines should not impose additional price increases unless such terms were clearly agreed upon in the contract. The Arbeiterkammer Oberösterreich (AK OÖ), a regional consumer protection agency, emphasized that passengers should review their booking terms carefully to understand their rights.

Travel Insurance and Compensation Gaps

Travel cancellation insurance, often purchased to safeguard against unforeseen disruptions, typically does not cover costs arising from flight cancellations due to price increases. This leaves travelers vulnerable if they decide to cancel due to unaffordable hikes.
