Thomas Herzog, the husband of former speed skating world champion Vanessa Herzog, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, he announced on Tuesday.
The Austrian athlete and coach confirmed his diagnosis in a statement, expressing determination to continue his life with "unbroken confidence and fighting spirit." Despite the health challenge, Herzog stated his goal is to participate in another Olympic cycle alongside his wife, a decorated speed skater who has represented Austria in multiple Winter Games.
Diagnosis and Determination
Thomas Herzog revealed his brain tumor diagnosis publicly for the first time, though the exact type and stage of the tumor were not disclosed. In his statement, he emphasized his resolve to face the illness head-on while maintaining his athletic ambitions.
"I have decided to continue my life with unbroken confidence and fighting spirit," Herzog said in German. "Mein erklärtes Ziel ist es, gemeinsam mit Vanessa noch einen weiteren Olympischen Zyklus zu bestreiten." ("My declared goal is to participate in another Olympic cycle with Vanessa.")
The couple, known in the speed skating world for their close partnership, has previously worked together in training and competition. Vanessa Herzog, a former world champion in the 500-meter event, has not yet publicly commented on her husband’s diagnosis.
