Kansas City, July 12, 2026
In the World Cup quarterfinal between Switzerland and Argentina, a dive by Breel Embolo in the 70th minute decided the match: Following a video assistant referee intervention, the striker received a yellow-red card, after which Argentina took advantage of the extra man and won the game 3:1.
The Swiss national team faced the biggest challenge of its recent history in the quarterfinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi – who had already scored eight goals at this tournament – awaited them in Kansas City. The squad coached by Murat Yakin had gone into the match as underdogs but had already made history by reaching a World Cup quarterfinal for the first time in 72 years.
Argentina took an early lead, but Switzerland fought back. In the 67th minute, Dan Ndoye equalized to make it 1:1 and brought the Swiss back into the game. Just three minutes later came the moment that would turn the match: At the halfway line, Embolo sensed an opponent charging toward him and took off before any effective contact had occurred.
The decisive moment
Referee Joao Pinheiro initially failed to read the situation and showed the yellow card to Argentine player Leandro Paredes. The VAR, however, intervened with the note "mistaken identity" and reviewed the incident. On the screen, the official recognized that Embolo had already been hit while in the air.
