Employee accuses ORF chief Weißmann of affair – his lawyer calls it tabloid nonsense

Roland Kier, who represents the employee in criminal law matters, told DER STANDARD on inquiry, "that my client will not comment on such tabloid nonsense at all." He also announced that he would examine criminal legal steps against the originators of corresponding claims. In doing so, the employee, whose lawyer is making the accusations public, simultaneously stands behind the allegation while refusing further statements.

At the same time, the question of the role of the ORF bodies arises. Her lawyer submitted these protocols and recordings, along with image and text documents, to the chairpersons of the ORF bodies in March 2026 and demanded Weißmann's resignation. Whether the bodies took action on the basis of these documents initially remained open.

Role of the ORF bodies

Norbert Wess, who has previously appeared in the case's background as a critic of Weißmann, is also mentioned in earlier reports. No direct connection to the employee's current account could be derived from the information available. The role of the Kronen Zeitung and its subsidiary Krone Multimedia (KMM) in the reporting on Weißmann also remained without clear attribution in the sources available.

Weißmann himself has so far publicly rejected the accusations leveled against him. The ORF initially declined to comment substantively on the new accounts at DER STANDARD's request and referred to ongoing internal proceedings. The question of whether the ORF bodies will draw consequences on the basis of the documents submitted in March remains open.

The employee, who according to DER STANDARD has long been critical of Weißmann, is said to have previously used internal channels. Her current step of going public with legal representation marks an escalation in the dispute over the ORF leadership that has been simmering for months.

Observers assess the proceedings as a further stress test for the independence of the ORF bodies and the broadcaster's internal oversight. Should the allegations be substantiated, the public-service legitimacy of the Director General would also be called into question. The coming weeks are likely to show whether the bodies initiate a formal review.

So far, only two contradictory accounts are established: that of the employee, who accuses Weißmann of misconduct, and that of her lawyer, who dismisses the matter as tabloid nonsense. An independent review of the submitted image and text documents, as well as the protocols and recordings, is pending.

The case is part of a series of stress tests the ORF has faced in recent months. Regardless of the outcome of the current allegations, the internal control mechanisms and the role of the ORF bodies will be put to the test.
