East Kalimantan, Indonesia — April 21, 2026 Eni finds 5tcf gas in Indonesia's Kutei Basin
Italian energy giant Eni has announced a major gas discovery at the Geliga-1 exploration well in the Ganal block offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia, with preliminary estimates indicating roughly 5 trillion cubic feet of gas in place and 300 million barrels of condensate.
Significant Resource Potential
The Geliga-1 well, located about 70 kilometers from the Indonesian coast, encountered a substantial gas column in the Miocene interval. Eni stated that the discovery could support an additional 1 billion cubic feet per day of gas production and 80,000 barrels per day of condensate. The find is one of the largest in the region in recent years and could significantly bolster Indonesia's energy reserves.
The discovery's proximity to existing and planned infrastructure offers a faster and more cost-effective development route. Eni emphasized that the Geliga site sits near key facilities, including the Bontang LNG plant, which could streamline production and export processes. The company is evaluating whether the new volumes, combined with nearby discoveries, could justify expanding liquefaction capacity at Bontang, potentially extending the life of one of Southeast Asia's most critical LNG facilities.
