Brussels, May 5, 2026
The European Commission has approved a €900 million Austrian state aid program to help energy-intensive companies offset higher electricity costs caused by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).
Funding Details and Eligibility
The funding will cover up to 75% of the indirect emission costs incurred by energy-intensive companies in the previous year. Eligible sectors include iron, steel, aluminum, paper, and chemical industries—all of which are highly exposed to international competition. Around 200 Austrian industrial plants are required to participate in the ETS, according to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ).
