A survey conducted by the EU Commission has found that young people in the EU perceive social media more positively than their parents.

What is new since 17 June

The EU Commission has presented a survey in which young people and parents were independently asked about their views on social media. According to the Commission, the result is clear: adolescents evaluate the platforms predominantly positively, while parents assess their impact considerably more sceptically. The report was published on 17 June 2026 and fits into the ongoing debate over how to handle digital services in the EU.

According to the findings, young people see social media primarily as a space for exchange, entertainment, and information. Many respondents stated that they maintain friendships there, discover new interests, and inform themselves about current topics. Negative aspects such as strain from comparative pressure or loss of time are indeed mentioned by the young people in the survey, but recede into the background in the overall assessment.
