Families gather bodies after Bangkok-area school shooting leaves at least seven dead

Relatives spent much of Friday at hospitals and morgues in Nonthaburi province, identifying the dead and arranging for the transfer of remains. Authorities set up family liaison stations and counseling services. The Health Ministry coordinated with local hospitals to manage the wounded, several of whom were reported to be in critical condition.

Police said preliminary forensic work focused on confirming the cause of death of the alleged attacker. "The gunshot wound found on the alleged attacker was compatible with the weapon he had used," Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, a forensic official involved in the examination, said in remarks reported by multiple outlets. He added that more detailed conclusions, including toxicology results, were expected later.

Forensic findings and the attacker's death

Investigators said the boy had acted alone and that the firearm used in the attack was a privately owned weapon. The case has reopened debate in Thailand about civilian access to firearms, a subject that has periodically drawn attention after high-profile killings in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces. According to data collected in 2017 by Small Arms Survey and GunPolicy.org, civilian gun ownership in Thailand stood at approximately 15.1 guns per 100 inhabitants, compared to fewer than one per 100 in neighboring Malaysia.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's government declared a period of national mourning and ordered flags at government buildings to fly at half-mast. The education ministry announced that schools in Nonthaburi province would remain closed on Monday while counseling staff were deployed and security reviews were carried out.

Gun ownership in Thailand under renewed scrutiny

Security analysts noted that mass shootings remain statistically rare in Southeast Asia relative to other regions, but said the Bangkok-area attack would likely accelerate scrutiny of licensing rules and of how firearms are stored in private homes. "Every time an incident like this happens, the question of access is going to come up," said one regional security researcher, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

World Population Review, which compiles international statistics on firearms, was cited in early coverage of the attack as a reference point for ownership rates. Officials have not yet said whether any changes to existing firearms law will be proposed in the immediate aftermath, though several opposition figures publicly called for a parliamentary review.

Government response and next steps

By Friday evening, the Health Ministry said it had accounted for all of the wounded taken to hospitals and that no further victims were expected to be identified overnight. Forensic teams were continuing their work on remains recovered from the scene, and a fuller casualty figure was expected once those examinations were complete.

The attack comes against a backdrop of public concern over youth violence in the kingdom, where schools have generally been considered safe environments. Counselors from the education ministry and from non-governmental organizations were dispatched to Debsirin Nonthaburi School and to nearby schools to support students and staff in the coming days.

Authorities urged members of the public with information about the weapon used in the attack, or about how the suspect obtained it, to contact a dedicated police hotline. The hotline, officials said, would be staffed around the clock through the weekend.
