FC Barcelona takes over La Liga summit with 2:0 against Athletic Bilbao

After the break, the hosts managed the lead with composure and conceded very little defensively. Coach Flick used the clear control of the game to save energy and give minutes to individual players. Bilbao did try to step up the pressure but failed to produce any clear finishes.

Significance for the start of the season

With the home win, Barcelona extends its strong form from the start of the season and gathers confidence for the tasks ahead. Top spot gives Flick's team a stable platform, even though the season is still young. Further tests in the league and in European competition await in the coming weeks.

For Athletic Bilbao, the defeat is a setback after an otherwise solid start to the season. The team will need to quickly put the trip to southern Spain behind them, as further competitive matches are already on the schedule at the weekend. Coach and officials will analyze the defensive shortcomings shown.

Outlook on the upcoming tasks

Barcelona can meanwhile look ahead. Top of the table is a first vindication of the work of coach Flick, who has given the team a new tactical direction since his arrival. The blend of experienced players and young talents is visibly bearing fruit at this point in the season.
