Nuremberg, July 15, 2026

The Federal Employment Agency (BA) in Nuremberg announced on July 15, 2026 that German industry lost 177,000 jobs over the past year.

Employment level in the manufacturing sector

As the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg reported, 6.5 million people were in mandatory social insurance employment in the manufacturing sector in December 2025. This represents almost one-fifth of all those in such employment in Germany as a whole. Compared to the same period the previous year, this represents a decline of considerable magnitude.

The automotive industry and its suppliers were hit particularly hard: 52,000 jobs were lost in the automotive industry and its suppliers alone. This means that almost one-third of the total job cuts fall on this key sector of the German economy.
