Zurich, April 29, 2026 FIFA raises World Cup prize money to $50 million
FIFA has announced a record $50 million prize for the 2026 World Cup champion, alongside increased payments for all participating teams, citing the tournament's commercial success and the organization's strong financial position.
Financial Boost for Teams
Each of the 48 teams competing in the 2026 World Cup will receive $10 million in starting money, along with an additional $2.5 million to cover preparation costs. This marks a significant increase from previous tournaments, reflecting FIFA's commitment to reinvesting in the sport.
The decision follows criticism from national football associations, which had argued for higher compensation to offset the rising costs of participation. FIFA's move is seen as an effort to address these concerns while maintaining the tournament's prestige.
Infantino Cites Financial Stability
FIFA President Gianni Infantino attributed the increased payouts to the organization's robust financial health. In a statement, he emphasized FIFA's ability to support its member associations more than ever before.
"stolz darauf, sich in der finanziell stabilsten Position ihrer Geschichte zu befinden, was es uns ermöglicht, all unseren Mitgliedsverbänden auf beispiellose Weise zu helfen. Dies ist ein weiteres Beispiel dafür, wie die Ressourcen der FIFA wieder in den Sport reinvestiert werden," Infantino said.
