German long-distance runner Florian Bremm sensationally won the silver medal in the 5,000 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The race
Hardly anyone had counted on the German in the 5,000 metres beforehand – so the surprise was all the greater when Bremm moved into the medal places at the Birmingham stadium. After a courageous race, he secured second place behind the Norwegian titleholder Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who was part of the wider circle of favourites.
Bremm, who comes from the Upper Palatinate town of Bremm, cleverly used the pace of the field and stayed in contact with the leading group for long stretches of the race. In the final metres he lacked the energy to seriously challenge Ingebrigtsen, but second place was never in doubt.
