Florian Bremm wins silver in 5,000 metres at European Athletics Championships in Birmingham

Second DLV medal on the opening evening

The German Athletics Association (DLV) was thus able to celebrate its second medal on the first finals evening of the continental championships. Earlier, Yemisi Mabry had taken bronze in the shot put – a result that, according to the federation, made for a successful opening in Birmingham.

As the federation announced, the silver for Bremm and bronze for Mabry are the first two medals for the DLV on the first finals evening of the European Championships. The German team therefore features early in the record books of the championships.

For Bremm himself, the success in Birmingham is the biggest of his career to date. The long-distance runner had only played a supporting role in the season's races so far, which makes his performance at the Birmingham stadium all the more impressive. In the German athletics scene, his display was honoured with the phrase «Bärenstarker Bremm».

Outlook on further European Championship decisions

The 5,000-metre competition was dominated by the Norwegian Ingebrigtsen dynasty, which has shaped European long-distance running in recent years. Bremm withstood the pace and saw off the international competition, clearly surpassing expectations.

With a view to the remaining disciplines, the German federation is likely to build on the success. The European Championships in Birmingham are still ongoing, with further final decisions to come. Bremm's silver medal is seen as a signal that the German endurance tradition can again hold its own at major events.

Away from the track, the first finals evening also went well from a German perspective. Mabry's bronze medal in the shot put rounded off the team's performance and confirmed the depth of the DLV squad.

After the two medals on the opening evening, the DLV expressed confidence about the rest of the championships. Both Bremm and Mabry had delivered two pleasing results for the federation, which are intended to serve as a springboard for further good placings.

Ingebrigtsen, meanwhile, secured another international title and confirmed his exceptional standing in European long-distance running. Bremm's silver was described by the Norwegian as evidence of the growing strength of the field.
