Austrian football coach Ralph Hasenhüttl has revealed harrowing details of his near-fatal battle with a Hantavirus infection in 2012, describing excruciating pain that felt like "a needle being stabbed into his head" and a "knife in his back."

The former FC Southampton manager, now coaching in Austria, contracted the rare virus while cleaning his terrace, likely by inhaling dust contaminated with rodent excretions. The illness left him hospitalized for two weeks in intensive care, with his liver and kidneys swelling dangerously.

The Onset of Illness

Hasenhüttl first noticed symptoms after a mountain bike tour during a training camp. Initially feeling weak, his condition rapidly deteriorated. "Es war, als würde mir eine Nadel in den Kopf gestochen," he recalled, describing the pain as unbearable. The virus caused severe organ swelling, with his liver and kidneys pressing against other internal structures.
