WASHINGTON, April 28, 2026 James Comey charged again over Instagram post
Former FBI Director James Comey has been charged again, five months after a federal judge dismissed an earlier lawsuit against him, this time over a since-deleted Instagram post featuring the numbers 86 and 47 made from seashells.
The new charge, reported by the New York Times, stems from allegations that the post contained a hidden message targeting former U.S. President Donald Trump. The numbers 86 and 47 were interpreted by Trump as a threat, with the former president claiming they meant "kill" and referenced his status as the 47th president.
Allegations and Trump's Response
Donald Trump publicly accused Comey of inciting violence through the post. In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated: *"Das bedeutete Mord, und das kommt laut und deutlich zum Ausdruck"* ("That meant murder, and it comes across loud and clear"). Trump linked the number 47 to his potential reelection as the 47th U.S. president and alleged that the post was a veiled threat.
Comey has denied the allegations, asserting that he opposes all forms of violence. The former FBI director has not elaborated on the meaning of the numbers but maintains that the post was innocuous. The charge marks the second legal action against Comey in less than a year, following a dismissed lawsuit in September 2025 that accused him of making false statements to Congress and obstructing an investigation.
