Bangkok, Thailand — February 2024

Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released from prison in February 2024 after serving part of an eight-year sentence for corruption and abuse of power. The 76-year-old billionaire, who led the country from 2001 until a military coup ousted him in 2006, had been detained since his return from self-imposed exile in August 2023.

Legal Proceedings and Early Release

The Supreme Court of Thailand ruled that Shinawatra had unlawfully served part of his sentence in a hospital in 2023. He was originally sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of corruption and abuse of power. However, his term was cut short, and he was granted early release in February 2024.

Supporters gathered outside the detention facility, with some chanting, "Wir lieben Thaksin" ("We love Thaksin"). His release marks a significant moment in Thailand’s turbulent political landscape, where Shinawatra remains a polarizing figure. His populist policies during his tenure earned him a loyal following, particularly among rural voters, but also drew fierce opposition from the country’s elite and military.
