Wolfgang Steinmayr, a four-time winner of the Tour of Austria and one of the country’s most celebrated cyclists, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 81 after a long illness.
A Cycling Legend
Steinmayr dominated the Tour of Austria (Österreich-Rundfahrt) in the 1970s, securing victories in 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. His performances earned him the nickname "Glocknerkönig" (King of the Grossglockner) in 1972 and 1975, a title awarded to the best climber in the race. Despite competing as an amateur, he frequently outperformed professional riders, cementing his reputation as one of Austria’s greatest cyclists.
His success extended beyond national borders. The respected French sports newspaper *L'Equipe* once named him the best stage racer in the world and dedicated its front page to him. Steinmayr also represented Austria in the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976, further showcasing his talent on the international stage.
