Paris, July 5, 2026

An appeal court in Paris will announce on Tuesday, July 7, whether Marine Le Pen, convicted of embezzlement, will be allowed to run in the 2027 presidential election.

In March 2025, the chairwoman of the Rassemblement National (RN) was found guilty in the first instance for the fictitious employment of EU assistants. The court imposed a prison sentence of four years, two of which were suspended and two to be served with an electronic ankle bracelet. At the same time, it issued a five-year ban from holding public office, which fundamentally called into question Le Pen's political future.

Le Pen filed an appeal against the verdict. The appeal court intends to announce on Tuesday whether it confirms or modifies the guilty verdict. A central question is the duration of the ineligibility: Should the court reduce the ban to two years and set the start date as March 2025, Le Pen could take part in both rounds of voting in April and May 2027.
