The French actress Isabelle Adjani was found guilty of tax fraud by a Paris appeals court on Wednesday, but the sentence remained significantly below that imposed at first instance.
The judges found the 71-year-old guilty of illegally relocating her tax residence to Portugal for a period of time. Adjani had moved her residence to Portugal in 2016 and 2017 in order to evade her tax obligations in France, as the prosecution argued.
The judges also found it proven that the actress had disguised a cash gift of two million euros from a friend as a loan. In addition, she had transferred approximately 120,000 euros from an offshore company to Portugal via an undeclared US account.
Adjani testified in court in April that she had been deceived by one of her tax advisors. "Ehrlich gesagt habe ich noch nie eine Steuererklärung ausgefüllt. Ich sei eine "leichte Beute" für ihn gewesen, da sie an einer "Verwaltungsphobie" leide, the court recorded her as saying.
