French Constitutional Council strikes down blanket social media ban for minors

The bill originally provided that platforms would have to obtain explicit parental consent from users under 15. Violations were to be punished with substantial fines. According to its proponents, the aim was to protect young people from proven risks of social networks, including addictive behavior, cyberbullying, sleep disorders, social comparison, distorted body images, pressure to self-present, and an increased risk of anxiety disorders and depression.

Reasoning of the Constitutional Council

The Élysée Palace reacted immediately after the decision. According to a statement, Emmanuel Macron will task Sébastien Lecornu with revising the bill and resubmitting it to Parliament. The protection of young users is to be preserved without violating the Constitution.
