Wiesbaden, 12 June 2026

The inflation rate in Germany fell to 2.6 percent in May 2026, after reaching 2.9 percent in April — the highest level since January 2024.

The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden confirmed an initial estimate on 12 June 2026, stating that goods and services in Germany were 2.6 percent more expensive compared to the same month a year earlier. Overall, according to the statistics, consumer prices even declined by 0.2 percent from April to May 2026. Economists had on average expected this development.

Brand, the president of the Federal Statistical Office, assumes that the fuel discount likely mitigated inflation. The reduction in the energy tax on petrol and diesel by just under 17 cents per liter, in effect since 1 May, expires at the end of June. This brings an end to an important short-term dampening factor for price increases.
