Gakpo equalizes late with volley: Klopp denied victory on DFB debut against the Netherlands

For long spells of the second half, Germany had the better of the game. In the closing stages, the DFB side pushed for the win, but following a turnover by Serge Gnabry, the hosts struck with clinical efficiency. Substitute Ruben van Bommel played a precise pass to Gakpo with the outside of his foot, and the Dutch forward volleyed the delivery home first time to make it 1:1 at the final whistle.

Gakpo's late equalizer

Before the late setback, Germany had taken the lead through Kai Havertz. The Leverkusen attacker finished calmly to convert an assist and give his side a temporary 1:0 advantage. It was already Havertz's second international goal under Klopp, who had taken charge of the team following the recent disappointment at a major tournament.

At the other end, Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen once again delivered a strong performance. The FC Barcelona shot-stopper denied several dangerous efforts and kept his team in the game for long periods. In the 89th minute, ter Stegen also saved a Ruben van Bommel attempt before the late goal slipped through his hands in the second minute of stoppage time.

Ter Stegen as a reliable anchor

After the final whistle, Klopp delivered his typically direct assessment. He praised his team's performance over long stretches but criticized the decisive turnover in the attacking phase. "Das ist Fußball, manchmal bist du der Held und manchmal bist du der Verlierer in derselben Minute", said Klopp, referring to the build-up to the opposition goal.

The Netherlands, who had to make do without their injured star player, expressed relief after the game. Coach Ronald Koeman spoke of a "wichtigen Punkt" in the battle for top spot in the Nations League group. He said his team had kept its composure after falling behind and increased the pressure on the German penalty area in the closing stages.

Statistically, Germany had over 60 percent of possession and won more duels in the midfield battles. Felix Nmecha, deployed in central midfield, led the tackling statistics and delivered a convincing performance. Going forward, the DFB side also created numerous chances but failed to convert them consistently.

Outlook on the upcoming tasks

For Klopp and his team, the schedule now continues at a rapid pace. The next Nations League fixture is already lined up for the coming weekend. With an eye on the upcoming World Cup finals, the new national team coach must continue to fine-tune the side and stabilize the performances shown so far.

On social media, the late equalizer sparked lively discussion among German fans. While some rated the draw as a success, others expressed disappointment at the victory that slipped away. The next match will show whether Klopp and his team can confirm the positive trend from the second half.
