A German citizen kidnapped in Niger has apparently been released, according to information from the Austrian government; Austria's Foreign Ministry confirmed the release on Saturday.

The man had previously been abducted in the region around the desert city of Agadez in northern Niger. According to information from the Algerian army, he was picked up near the Niger-Algerian border. There were initially no official statements on the exact circumstances of the rescue and the man's whereabouts.

Background of the kidnapping

The Austrian Foreign Ministry said the release was due to its diplomatic efforts. Foreign Minister Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal had personally advocated for the release. "We have been working intensively on a solution in recent months. Now we have achieved an initial important success," said a ministry spokeswoman.
