German released in Niger – Vienna confirms

Domestic policy spokespeople in Vienna expressed relief at the outcome of the kidnapping. The Greens' foreign policy spokeswoman, Eva Gretzmacher, spoke of an "important diplomatic success that also gives hope to other cases of affected hostages in the region."

According to previous findings, the background to the kidnapping was an alleged business transaction in the gold trade. According to Algerian sources, the German was said to have been in Niger in the area of so-called gold dealings when he was abducted. However, an official confirmation of these circumstances is still pending.

Role of the Algerian army

In recent weeks, the Algerian government had already told Vienna that it was actively working to secure the man's release. Intelligence circles in Algiers spoke of a delicate operation in an already unstable border area between Niger, Mali, and Algeria.

The man's family also expressed relief. In a brief statement, they thanked the authorities of both countries for their efforts and asked that no further details about the person be released for the time being.

It remains unclear whether the release took place as part of a ransom deal or a pure intelligence operation. The question of whether other kidnapping victims in the region are still being held is also the subject of ongoing diplomatic consultations.
