Gesa Krause has won the gold medal in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, thereby delivering the first title of these championships to the German Athletics Association (DLV).
The 32-year-old clearly prevailed over her rivals in the final and brought the title to Germany after a strong finishing phase. In the stadium in Birmingham, which became the venue for the continental championships in England, Krause celebrated her greatest international outdoor success. The victory also marked the first title for the DLV at these European Championships.
Meyer falls and drops out
Co-favourite Lea Meyer, who had been considered a medal contender, dropped out of the race early after a fall. She was unable to continue the race and thus missed the chance of a podium finish. No concrete information about her state of health after the fall was initially known.
