Brussels, 20 May 2026

Bas Eickhout, co-chair of the Greens in the European Parliament, announced his immediate resignation on Wednesday after disclosing his relationship with 25-year-old Austrian Green deputy Lena Schilling.

Eickhout, 49, made the announcement via social media, stating he had 'not always done the right thing' and admitted to relationships 'that did not fit with my role.' His resignation comes at a politically sensitive time ahead of the mid-term renewal of key leadership positions in the European Parliament in early 2027.

A spokesperson for Eickhout emphasized that his resignation was not related to his relationship with Schilling, who is 24 years his junior. The Green EU group told Politico the relationship was disclosed to ensure transparency and avoid conflicts of interest.
