The co-chair of the Greens group in the European Parliament, Bas Eickhout, announced he will step down as an MEP with immediate effect on Wednesday.

In a statement released via social media, the 49-year-old Dutch politician said he had 'critically reflected on my own actions in the past period' and acknowledged 'I have not always done the right thing.'

Eickhout emphasized his resignation was unrelated to his recently disclosed relationship with 25-year-old Austrian MEP Lena Schilling, though he admitted to undisclosed 'relationships that were not compatible with my role.'

A Greens spokesperson told Politico the resignation followed Eickhout's realization that 'a professional, open working environment is crucial' under the party's code of conduct.
