Group Attack Trial at the Water Park: Vienna Regional Court Acquits All Ten Defendants

The course of events on the day of the crime: The victim, who had believed in a peaceful discussion, had been summoned to the skate area at the water park. He brought his younger brother and two friends with him. This was followed by the violent escalation. They were partly seriously injured at the time.

All ten defendants had previously pleaded not guilty. They claimed to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. While the brothers of the alleged ringleader were acquitted of the charges on Wednesday, the mastermind of the attack remains a fugitive.

As long as a court has not been convinced to the contrary on the basis of a comprehensible body of evidence, the defendant's position stands – irrespective of the media or political attention a case may previously have generated.

The fact that the public prosecutor's office waived its right to appeal immediately after the verdict is regarded in criminal law practice as a signal that the authority itself sees no prospect of success in a higher court.

For the four injured young men, who were in some cases seriously injured, the conclusion of the proceedings means that their statements before the court ultimately did not lead to the conviction of any suspects.
