A Canadian woman was killed and six others injured after a gunman opened fire at Mexico’s famed Teotihuacan archaeological site on Monday before dying by suicide, authorities confirmed.
Shooter Dies by Suicide After Attack
The assailant, whose identity remains undisclosed, began shooting at visitors within the UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the iconic Pyramid of the Sun. Police reported that the gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
Among the victims was a Canadian tourist, whose death has drawn international attention. Six additional individuals sustained injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities. Mexico’s security cabinet confirmed that the injured were receiving medical care.
Reactions and Solidarity
The attack prompted an outpouring of grief and condemnation. "What happened today in Teotihuacan hurts us deeply," said an official statement. The message, issued in Spanish, continued: "I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families."
Canadian authorities have yet to issue a formal response. Canada’s foreign ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment from Reuters. The lack of an official statement has left some questioning the extent of diplomatic coordination in the aftermath of the tragedy.
