Goalkeeper Salko Hamzic has been called up to the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team for the first time, while the ÖFB has commented on the departure of the former Austrian U21 talent with equanimity.
Hamzic, who plays in goal for WSG Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga, received the nomination for the upcoming international matches of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian side. Sergej Barbarez has included the shot-stopper in the squad. As a result, the goalkeeper – who previously came through the ÖFB's Austrian youth teams – will represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at federation level going forward.
The fact that Hamzic has not yet featured internationally for Austria is likely to have opened up the option of switching. Players who have not made a competitive appearance for a senior national federation regularly remain eligible to play for another federation, provided the legal-sporting requirements – such as citizenship or corresponding roots – are met. Bosnia and Herzegovina is thus turning to a keeper trained in Austria.
