Granadilla, Tenerife – May 10, 2026

After a 40-day odyssey, the first passengers of the cruise ship "Hondius," hit by a Hantavirus outbreak, were brought ashore at the port of Granadilla in Tenerife and evacuated.

First Evacuations

Fourteen Spaniards—13 passengers and one crew member—were the first to be transported in small groups via boats to the port of Granadilla in the south of the Canary Island. They then boarded buses operated by the military emergency unit UME to be taken to Tenerife South Airport, a 10 to 15-minute drive away.

"The disembarkation of Spanish passengers and crew has begun," the Health Ministry in Madrid announced. Passengers are required to wear FFP2 masks and may only carry light hand luggage.

Quarantine and Further Measures

The WHO recommended a 42-day quarantine for affected passengers starting Sunday. "Subsequently, they will be transferred to Germany, where close contacts will initially receive medical care," a ministry spokesperson explained. "Early next week, they will be transported to their respective federal states for quarantine, as mandated by local health authorities."
