Oldenburg, 09 June 2026

The Higher Regional Court of Oldenburg has largely upheld the first-instance conviction of two animal rights activists from Animal Rights Watch for covert film recordings in a slaughterhouse in Lohne (Vechta district) and modified the ruling in individual points in favor of the activists.

The two activists, a woman and a man, were apprehended by police on the slaughterhouse premises in May 2024 while they were there covertly. As the ruling shows, at least the woman had illegally entered the facility in March 2024 and installed cameras for recording. The covertly installed cameras recorded, among other things, images of pigs being lowered in a gondola into a shaft and being stunned there with highly concentrated carbon dioxide; in the videos, the animals can be seen restless and screaming.
