Houthis attack military camp in Yemen – at least 38 soldiers killed

According to unconfirmed reports, the attacks also took place in the oil-rich province of Marib, which has for years been the scene of intense fighting between the Houthis and pro-government forces. Marib is considered strategically significant because it contains important energy infrastructure and a key supply route.

The attacks come at a time when efforts to secure a ceasefire in Yemen have flared up again. The United Nations had attempted in recent months to bring the parties to the conflict to the table, but a lasting ceasefire has so far not been achieved.

In parallel to the attacks inside the country, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in recent months. They justify this with solidarity with the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and as a response to airstrikes by the US-led coalition.

Local health authorities warned on Thursday that the death toll could rise further, as several wounded had been admitted to hospitals in critical condition. The exact number of attacks and the types of weapons used were only partially confirmed by officials at first.

The international community condemned the attacks. Saudi Arabia called on the international community to increase pressure on the Houthis, citing the threat to regional security. Iran rejected any responsibility for the attacks.
