Ifo Business Expectations in the Auto Industry Climb to Highest Level in Over Three Years

Ifo expert Anita Wölfl sees the broad basis of the recovery as a decisive factor. In addition to established automakers such as Volkswagen and BMW, manufacturers of bodies, superstructures, as well as equipment and component manufacturers benefited in particular. These companies can increasingly deploy their products outside the automotive sector as well, for example in the defense industry.

The rising expectations come at a phase in which manufacturers are increasingly focusing on diversification. Growing demand for armaments and defense technology opens up additional sales markets for companies that had previously supplied primarily the automotive industry.

Eurozone Economy Supports the Mood

The rise in expectations is also supported by the general economic situation in the eurozone. More robust industrial production and a more stable order situation are making companies more confident about the coming months.

Volkswagen and BMW are among the beneficiaries of the improved sentiment, according to the Ifo Institute's assessment. Both groups had struggled in recent quarters with sales weaknesses and transformation issues; the new expectations now point to a possible turning point.

Ifo Warns Against Overinterpretation

At the same time, the Ifo Institute warns against overinterpreting the rise. The sub-index remains in negative territory, even if the distance to the zero line is now only minimal. Only a sustained jump above zero points would signal a broad economic recovery.

The development in business expectations is considered an important leading indicator for investment decisions and personnel planning in the sector. If the positive trend continues in the coming months, this could also have an impact on suppliers and vendors in Germany's industrial regions.

Defense Sector as a New Growth Driver

Observers also point to geopolitical shifts that are strengthening the defense sector as a growth driver for industrial products. Rising defense spending by European countries is opening up new order fields for suppliers that previously manufactured predominantly automotive parts.

The Ifo Institute surveys several hundred companies in the automotive sector each month on their current business situation and expectations. The sub-index for business expectations is considered a particularly sensitive sentiment indicator, as it reflects managers' assessments for the coming six months.

Overall, the latest Ifo publication shows that the trough in the automotive sector is increasingly coming within reach, at least from the perspective of managers. The combination of new order momentum in the defense sector and a stabilizing industrial economy in the eurozone is supporting recovery expectations.
