Naples, Italy — May 13, 2026

Igor Arrieta triumphed in a dramatic fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia, overcoming crashes, a wrong turn, and a last-gasp sprint to claim victory in Naples on Thursday.

Chaotic Finale Decides Stage

The 141-kilometer flat route from Paestum to Naples seemed straightforward, but the stage descended into chaos in the final kilometers. Arrieta, initially a favorite, crashed on a descent 13.5 kilometers from the finish, seemingly clearing the path for Afonso Eulalio. However, Eulalio also fell 6.5 kilometers later, allowing Arrieta to catch up—only for the Spaniard to take a wrong turn shortly after.
