A B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed to the ground and exploded shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base, in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, killing eight people, according to US military authorities.

The incident occurred at 11:20 local time on Monday, when the aircraft, a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, went down in the area of the air base located north of Los Angeles. The plane impacted the ground and caught fire, as confirmed by images posted on social media by American military personnel, showing columns of dense black smoke and vast charred desert areas near what appears to be a runway. Aerial footage showed that almost nothing remained of the bomber, with rescue vehicles deployed at the crash site.
